Diane Kruger thought Calvin Klein bosses were “kidding” when they asked her to be the face of their Beauty fragrance.

The 35-year-old actress – who began her modelling career in Paris at the age of 15 – believed the public would adopt a, “Who does she think she is?” attitude if she fronted the brand.

She explained: “It’s very cool to be the face of a perfume, that’s a very flattering thing. When Calvin Klein asked me to be the face of a perfume called ‘Beauty’ I was like, ‘Who are you kidding?’ when they told me the name.

“I was thinking people are going to say, ‘Who does she think she is from Helen of Troy to ‘Beauty’?’ Then with all the work I’ve done for cosmetics companies too it becomes very global.”

The German-born beauty admitted she is pleased to now have more of a say in which campaigns she fronts, as she likes the idea of making products “accessible to all women over the world”.

Diane added to The Independent newspaper: “From my modelling days, I have relationships with all these people and it’s kind of a cool thing that I still do that as well. It’s better these days as I now have more of say in what I do and so I don’t sign with people that I don’t stand behind.

“I like the idea of accessibility, coming from a lower-middle-class background myself, I feel like beauty and products should be accessible to women all over the world.”

Nabbing herself another high-end fashion gig, Diane Kruger was presented as the face of the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Lady Ultra Thin on Tuesday (January 18).

The “Inglourious Basterds” beauty was joined by CEO of Jaeger-LeCoultre, Jérôme Lambert, at the posh SIHH held ceremony. During the course of their stage time, the pair told the story of the last 3 years between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Miss Kruger since the Swiss Manufacture met her at the Venice film festival in 2007.

Expressing her long attachment with the brand, Diane said: “I feel more than honored to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Reverso. For my first at the SIHH, I was proud to reveal the new Grande Reverso Ultra Thin and I invite you to discover this new feminine Reverso.”

When it comes to fragrance, of course, these days Diane Kruger finds herself spritzing Calvin Klein Beauty, a feminine and sophisticated scent that puts a new twist on the lily, with notes of ambrette seeds, jasmine and cedarwood. Becoming the face of a perfume was not a task that the German-born starlet took lightly, admitting that it took her some time before she felt confident about signing on with the line.

“Personally, it was a really difficult decision to make to be the face of a perfume because it’s different when you put your name to it as a model,” she explains. “I did many perfume ads [while modeling]. I thought, I can’t do this and then not wear it or pretend like I like it, but I really don’t. It’s a weird thing. It took many months before this actually happened. They sent me the sample and I lived with it for a while.”

It was also important to Kruger that the ads weren’t too provocative, something Calvin Klein fragrances have been known for in the past.

“I love Calvin Klein and I knew the advertising was going to be beautiful,” she says. “I think with the campaign it was very important to go with what they wanted to do and what I wanted to do. I’m not a model anymore and I have no interest in doing that again. There needed to be an emotion and something that really embodied the essence of that specific perfume. I personally really like the picture and I think they were really accommodating, especially with the portrait. The portrait, to me, I recognize myself but also, something that I like in fashion, there’s a classiness, I guess, to it that I really like. I was a little worried that it was going to be too racy or too provocative because that’s not really what I’m like, or the kind of clothes I like. I think it all kind of came together.”

The Diane Kruger, “Calvin Klein Beauty” ad made its debut in the September magazines and the fragrance hits counters nationwide this month. The shot features a stunning Kruger with a creamy complexion, champagne-tinged lids, sheer pink gloss, and natural curls. The classic images stray from the brand’s sexually charged campaigns of the past, such as those for Obsession and Euphoria, and are geared towards a more mature client.

“It’s very elegant, and that’s why we wanted to work with Diane,” said Catherine Walsh, a senior vice presidents of American Fragrances at Coty Prestige. “This woman we’re trying to portray – she’s not someone who doesn’t have experiences in her life. We wanted this woman to be worldly and well-traveled, a confident woman and a woman who had strength.”

The spicy floral scent, developed with Sophie Labbé of International Flavors & Fragrances, is an interpretation of the lily, which has long been an inspiration for the house. It has top notes of ambrette seeds for a spicy warmth, a heart of jasmine to elevate the floral signature, and a drydown of cedarwood.

Calvin Klein’s fragrance ads typically drip with overt sex appeal, but the brand’s latest venture isn’t quite so obviously sultry. This October marks the launch of Calvin Klein Beauty ($50-$85), a refined floral that will be backed by the elegant Diane Kruger.

“Certainly sex is in our DNA, but this fragrance speaks to a different audience [than scents like Obsession and Euphoria]. It is very much the spirit of [Calvin Klein] Collection — elegant, sophisticated, timeless and beautiful — and designed to appeal to a more mature customer,” creative director Francisco Costa told WWD.

Set to debut in October, the scent, inspired by the calla lily, will include top notes of ambrette seeds, a middle note of jasmine, and a bottom note of cedarwood. But will Diane derobe much like Eva Mendes did for Secret Obsession? That’s a negative.

“They showed me the concept, and it was classy. So I knew from the beginning that I didn’t have to take my clothes off,” she said.

Expect to see the new scent, encased in an egg-shaped, silver-accented bottle, on TV, print, and online advertisements. Are you glad to see more clothing in this campaign, or do you prefer things more bare? (Source)

"The reason I stopped modeling was because I was not pleased with trying to portray something that is impossible to reach. Even when I do photo shoots now for films, I am just not interested in trying to look my best all the time anymore. That pursuit of an impossible perfection seems ridiculous to me now. I would rather show my vulnerabilities or my doubts than try to be something that no one is."
